Lee O’Connor ’76: Fifty years later, Rockledge still feels like home

In 1973, Alpha Sigma Phi initiated one of its smallest pledge classes ever — four men, two hotelies and two ROTC guys. This summer, I’ll be returning to Ithaca for our 50th reunion, and I can’t wait.

Joining Rockledge with my three brothers was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I spent sophomore year in the P-Loft with Bob Spraker, getting to know the hotelie from Minnesota. Warren Grosjean was my best friend for decades — after our small pledge class, he ran the rush campaigns that truly reinvigorated the house. We lost Warren to a tragic accident in 2013, and he is deeply missed. And I’ve only grown closer to Vernon Ellinger over the last ten years, through Cornell-Harvard hockey games, ski trips, and summer work parties at the house. Vernon is a tremendous supporter of Alpha Sigma Phi at Rockledge, and those bonds — with him and with so many alumni brothers — have only strengthened since graduation.

Serving on the House Corporation Alumni Board has been one of the most fulfilling things I do. Annual trips to Ithaca, catching up with old friends while working on the house, are now a highlight of my year.

I encourage every brother to get involved. Contribute financially, come to our summer work party (June 24–27), or consider joining the Corporation Board. The house gave us a lot. It needs us now.
